The official language of Japan is Japanese. It is spoken by more than 126 million people in Japan and by Japanese immigrants around the world. The Japanese language has three writing systems: kanji (Chinese characters), hiragana (a syllabic script), and katakana (used for foreign words and onomatopoeic expressions). Additionally, some Japanese people also speak English as a second language, especially in major cities, as it is taught in schools. The Ainu language, spoken by the indigenous Ainu people, is also recognized as a minority language in Japan. However, it is only spoken by a small number of people today.
